Chair caning demo at Hart's Square.
The near section of the log building was the blacksmith shop. A shoemaker worked in the center section. I believe the far section was storage. There is another small, log building beyond this one occupied by a broom maker.

Caning chairs

This is Denny Norvell, and he and his wife have a business in Auburn refinishing furniture. So the two of them were giving demonstrations on caning chairs. It looks like a lot of patient work!

The lamp makes lovely patterns when it's turned on. You can also really see the chair caning structure and the different thicknesses of the paper.

I chose a large, clear, vanity bulb because I wanted the lamp to be very bright, and I wanted the bulb to be a smooth, industrial shape in contrast with the organic shade.

This closeup shows how the kozo fibers covered the chair caning. The kozo shrank and wrinkled as it dried. It reminds me of cartiledge or bone marrow, something very organic and tissue-like.

This is a hanging pendant lamp I made for my final project in my sculptural paper class. It's sitting on the floor in this picture, though. It's made of chair caning (think wicker) that I knotted into a sort of basket-like shape. I then poured kozo fiber pulp over the caning basket until it was covered with a layer of paper. The bulb fitting and wiring were a "make your own lamp" kit from the hardware store.
